- First demonstrated in 1960, the laser¡¯s ability to effect changes in materials was immediately recognized as a potential major factor in manufacturing processes, with one publication in 1965 stating. ¡°Where present machines are ineffective or very costly, the laser may be a solution now.¡± In its first decade as a laboratory curiosity, a number of interesting applications were identified such as small hole drilling, marking and scribing, which employed converted laboratory devices to produce production parts. In the 1970¡¯s, commercial companies were established to serve a growing market demand and in the 1980s these, and more companies that focused on the industrial laser as a business evolved, which created a demand by worldwide manufacturing interests in this powerful processing tool. With the rapid commercialization of compact powerful mini-computers to take control of the laser process, and the entry of system integrators into the business mix, industrial lasers began a steady 19% CAGR through 2008. The evolution and recent rapid acceptance of fiber lasers and ultra-fast pulse lasers for processing on both a micro and macro scale assure the continued growth of the technology into the next decade.
